Promotion is a passive ability where units that fulfill a specific condition transform into other pieces. Typically, it means "when the unit reaches your opponent's back row". Some units, like Sylph, AirElemental, Gnome , Slime and Prince instead transform upon other pieces on different conditions, like "On Magic" or "On Kill".
On promotion, all status effects are removed (a complete transformation). Any changes to the abilities of the previous state of the unit do not affect the promoted unit (for example, Duelist without armor still turns into Fencer with armor on promote). Typically, minions that have this ability are not vertically symmetrical (exceptions: Princess, some tiers of Bat). Two minions, instead of promoting, get a teleport to your back row from your opponent's back row (Penguin, Bomber).
